Alaina is captivated by scientific inquiry, and her current role involves both collecting quality data and ensuring human components of research run smoothly. As the logistics coordinator of the bioacoustic programs across Oregon and Washington, she is often the first voice to answer a question or provide a solution to researchers in the field. After conducted northern spotted owl demography work from 2015 to 2019, Alaina switched to bioacoustic deployment on the Coast Range in 2020. For Alaina, bioacoustic monitoring is the best step forward in spotted owl research, and she is incredibly excited to see what possibilities this technology might hold. Bioacoustics can serve as an important tool to reduce human involvement with remaining northern spotted owl populations. Alaina remains hopeful for the future of spotted owl research within this realm.
Non-invasive bioacoustics, and subsequent data analysis, is Alaina’s current research focus. She greatly enjoys being in the field deploying ARUs and is looking forward to continuing to work with the analysis of recorded data. Alaina also assists with hiring seasonal employees, works on cleaning data sets, and creates sitemaps in GIS.
Prior to joining the lab, Alaina worked on a variety of avian related projects including nest searching in Oklahoma, collecting data on the golden cheeked warbler in Texas, and researching bird composition on the Kansas plains. She recognizes the importance of conserving the places she adventures and is deeply invested in protecting habitat for the old-growth associated species she has come to love. At home, she enjoys the nature in her own backyard as deer and turkey roam and where she plants her container garden for fresh tomatoes. She enjoys spending time with with friends and catching live music in Eugene.
