Mariam Alsaid is an ORISE Fellow who graduated with a bachelor's in Environmental Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Her background is in subsurface microbiology and cetacean bioacoustics. Mariam was introduced to research through her work with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where she conducted her senior thesis on groundwater microbial necrophagy (ie. the consumption of non-living microbial biomass). Mariam's first experience with bioacoustics was through her participation in Hatfield Marine Science Centre's REU in 2023. Mentored by the GEMM Lab, her project investigated the acoustic occurrence of sei whales, an elusive and understudied rorqual, offshore of Newport, Oregon. Outside of work, Mariam loves to spend her time crafting, hunting for obscure music, and making tasty treats and beverages.
